Steelers Week 2 Reaction

Ok guys, I have be honest with this one. I was only able to actually tune in to the game in the 3rd quarter this week. I was at a cottage with my lovely girlfriend and I figured a few more hours of quality time with her was mor important than football. It was really awesome to be honest and I have no regrets. That being said, my reaction is going to be a bit slim today. Next week's will be late, and hopefully awesome as I am going to be at the game! Lets get into it.

The Steelers Scored a Touchdown!

Finally the Steelers got one across the goal line this week! Ironically, this week they scored even less than last when Bos hit 6 field goals but still it feels good to see them punch one across. Justin Fields' first passing TD as a Steeler and hopefully just the first of many. He's looked comfortable back there and now we know that he is capable of leading a touchdown drive in the NFL.

The Defense is Awesome

Maybe this is more of an indictment on Bo Nix and the Broncos than it is a good sign for the Steelers defense but we have to give credit where credit is due. I tuned in just in time to see the Broncos finally get a big play to get into the Red Zone.  Their excitement was short lived when 7th round drafted rookie Cory Trice Jr. read Bo Nix' eyes beautifully to swoop in for a game changing interception in the red zone. The Steelers defense paired timely big plays with overall stinginess allowing only 295 total yards and a paltry 2/12 on third downs for the Broncos. You can tell that the offense has been designed with the defense in mind, not taking big risks and maximizing ball security to put the elite unit in good positions. The first two opponents weren't exactly world beaters offensively so we will have to monitor the effectiveness of the defense going forward, however the early signs are looking great.

Justin Fields is Legit

Another week of not eyepopping numbers for Justin Fields, but I really liked what I saw from him yet again. Fields has been making sound decisions out there, not turning the ball over and making big throws when needed. Both this game and last he's had some huge plays to Pickens called back due to penalties, if these get cleaned up his stat line will start to look more like the eye test shows. For total fairness sake, the Steelers are not asking Fields to do too much. The defense has been performing so well that the priority on offense has been to eat clock and not turn the ball over. Still, this is something the QB room last year was barely capable of doing so seeing Fields come in and execute has been a breath of fresh air.

Jaylen Warren Needs More Touches

Warren had 9 carries for 42 yards yesterday, every one of them was hard fought. Don't get me wrong, Najee has been playing great the first two games and he deserves the carries he's gotten, but that shouldn't come at the expense of Jaylen Warren. I believe the Steelers offense would be maximized if they used the backs as a 1A/1B situation rather than a 1/2. Pounding the ball will be a huge part of this team's identity on offense this year so having fresh legs at RB is destined to wear down opposing defenses. I am of the belief that Warren is as good as Harris in the backfield and I hope his workload ramps up as he recovers from a hamstring injury.

A Win is a Win

Only scoring 13 points isn't something to be super excited about, but only allowing 6 is. The Steelers are now 2-0 sitting on top of the division early. The wins, even though they have been ugly, have been wins. This is more than their division rivals in Baltimore or Cincinnati can say. Next week will be the first "real" test of the season at home against the Chargers. I will be at this game cheering louder than anyone in the stadium, bring me home another win boys and lets get to 3-0!
