Logan's Top 5 QBs for 2025
Football is right around the corner with the Cowboys taking on the Eagles tomorrow night, and I couldn't be more excited. 1 year ago today I wrote my top 5 QBs post, which is in my opinion a fun way to kick off the season. Looking back at it now, I was so high on the CJ Stroud sophomore season I think I even picked them to win the Superbowl. I'm of course going to make the same mistakes again this year, what fun are these posts if not to look back on how silly I was. Tomorrow if I have time I'll pick the division winners and Superbowl winner to get you Lohensporters fully T'd up for this season. Without further delay here's the 2025 top 5 QBs:
Honorable mentions: Jalen Hurts, Justin Herbert
It feels bad leaving the Superbowl MVP off my top 5, but I'm stupidly high on Jayden Daniels, probably to a fault like I was with CJ Stroud. Herbert might feel like a stretch but it's just the Chargers stink. This guy can do everything Mahomes and Allen can he's just on a team that consistently finds ways to be less than the sum of their parts. Either of these guys in your top 5 isn't a bad call, I wouldn't judge you.
5. Jayden Daniels
Something about a stellar rookie season just gets me going. I did this with CJ Stroud last season and I'm doing it again with Jayden Daniels, maybe I just want to say I was here first. Daniels has a legit case outside of my own biases though. Last season he won offensive rookie of the year, threw 25 TDs with just 9 INTs, lead a usually terrible Commanders team to 12 wins and took out the 15-2 Lions in the playoffs. He also ran for 52.4 yards per game with 6 rushing TDs. For context, In Lamar Jackson's most recent MVP season he had a combined 4,499 yards rushing and passing with 29 TDs and 13 turnovers. Jayden Daniels last season had a combined 4,459 yards rushing and passing with 31 TDs and 9 turnovers. If you put up nearly identical stats to an MVP, make your team a winning team and knock out the best regular season team in the league in the playoffs you've earned yourself a spot on my QB top 5. I can't wait to watch this guy again this year.
4. Lamar Jackson
My biases are forcing me to drop Lamar to 4, which is probably much lower than the consensus. I mentioned his 2023 stats above, 2024 was an even better season that would've seen him win MVP if not for voter fatigue. Lamar had 41 TD passes last season and just 4 INTs. Not only that, he ran for more yards than 2023 and lead the league in yards per attempt on the ground. So if a 2x MVP just came off his best season ever, why is he ranked #4 on my list? It's not just because I hate the Ravens, though that is a factor. It's because time and time again Lamar comes up in a big game in the playoffs and plays worse than he has all season long. This year yes Mark Andrews dropped a would be game winning TD pass to secure a Ravens loss, but Lamar still had 2 turnovers in this game in a trend that happens literally every year. I expect Lamar is going to be awesome again this season, the Ravens are going to win 12-15 games and he's going to be an MVP candidate. I also expect that he's going to have a stinker in the playoffs again and for that I can't put him as high as I did last year.
3. Joe Burrow
Someone get this man some help. If the Bengals had just a league average defense then Joe would be getting love from some people as the NFL's QB1. Last season Burrow lead the league in passing yards, 4,918, passing TDs, 43, completed over 70% of his passes despite leading the league in attempts with 652 and only threw 9 INTs the entire season. He also lead the Bengals to a 9-8 record despite having a putrid defense and a terrible start to the season. The Bengals doubled down on this strategy this year paying their big receivers and ignoring their biggest weaknesses. We should see another season of the Bengals losing games 35-30, but Joe Burrow still deserves love for what he can do. The only QB in recent years to take on Patrick Mahomes in the playoffs and win can also put up some monster regular seasons. If the team gets off to a better start, Burrow should have serious MVP buzz.
2. Josh Allen
I really badly wanted to put him as #1 this year, but after another loss to Patrick Mahomes in the playoffs I just can't award it to him yet. Last season the experts were calling it a rebuild year for the Bills. They just lost all their receivers and it was looking like they were due for a down year. I called it then and was right, Josh Allen is too good to let his team miss the playoffs. Last year Josh' statistical case for MVP was not as strong as Lamar's. He had fewer yards, TDs, more INTs and completed a lower percentage of his passes with almost half the rushing yards. When you look at team build up though and actually watch Josh play, you can see why he got the nod and why he is still a strong candidate for the #1 spot on this list. Josh can throw the ball a mile, he can run, he can truck linebackers and he elevates his teammates every season. Josh Allen might not always have the best stats in the league but he does what it takes to win games consistently. If my Steelers aren't the champs this year, I hope Allen gets one.
1. Patrick Mahomes
I don't feel good about it! I love hating this guy as much as everyone else! I also know that he had an absolute stinker in the Superbowl where pretty much all his stats came in garbage time when the game was long over. The thing is, this guy's made the conference finals in every year he's played except for his rookie season. The only QBs in the AFC to beat Mahomes have been the GOAT Tom Brady and Joe Burrow. Ignore all stats for a second and just walk with me. When Brady was playing and games came down to the last few possessions, you always had the creeping feeling that if Brady gets the ball last, the game is over he's going to win. Patrick Mahomes feels the exact same way. A lot was said about the refs helping KC out last year, and there's something to that, but there's also a reason the Chiefs have won an NFL record 17 straight 1 score games, when he needs to he'll get the job done. You don't get haters if you suck, this is one of the best we've ever seen play the position and until someone snatches this title from him in the playoffs he's still my QB1.
That's that! Fun exercise, can't wait to look back on it at the end of the season and laugh at my takes.
